With 3:50 left in the third quarter, Adam Mohammed pushed in from a yard out and California had erased an eleven-point deficit. Tosh Lupoi's defense had just held UCLA to 21 yards on twelve plays and forced three straight punts in his head-coaching debut. Linebacker Kamar Mothudi said the place was electric, and the scoreboard agreed with him: 24-24, two first-time head coaches, and a fourth quarter that was the night's first real question. What UCLA did next is the strangest thing in this box score. It essentially stopped throwing the football and scored 21 unanswered points.

UCLA's Passing Game Went Backward. It Won the Second Half 21-0
UCLA's second-half drop-backs netted minus seven yards. Offenses that do that lose by eleven; this one won the half 21-0, and the reason is the least repeatable number on the field.
What we projected, and where we were wrong
Our margin model made this a coin flip, and the reasons pulled hard against each other. Last season's body of work was the single biggest input, and it pushed 6.2 points toward California. Everything else pushed back: raw roster talent was worth 5.3 points to UCLA, the transfer portal another 4.5, the quarterback comparison 1.5 more. Add it up and we had UCLA by four-tenths of a point, a 49.9% game. Against a market that made UCLA a 2.5-point favorite, California was our lean.
Right side, wrong size, and the against-the-spread lean lost. Margin is where this model earns its keep and it missed by 20.6 points here, an honest miss rather than a rounding error. The more interesting failure sits underneath. We projected both offenses as the stronger unit in their matchup. UCLA's arrived exactly as advertised: +0.42 expected points per play, a 57% success rate, explosive plays at 125% of its own norm. California's did not: +0.13 per play and a 34% success rate, and that is with Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele finishing with 271 passing yards and two touchdowns. The gap between what the Bears' box score says and what their offense actually did is the rest of this article.
The stand that should have decided it
California's third quarter was the best stretch either defense played. UCLA's first three possessions after halftime went punt, punt, punt. SI counted the stand as 21 yards on twelve plays; the play-by-play has it at 16 on eleven. Either way it was a wall, and UCLA's entire third quarter came to eight snaps and five yards. Asked afterward what pleased him most, Lupoi did not hesitate.
The defense coming out in the third quarter on fire was just awesome.
It cost both sides a player. Twelve seconds into that quarter, Cal linebacker AJ Tuitele hit UCLA's Landon Ellis in the head just as Ellis dumped off a pass, and Ellis's head bounced off the turf. He stayed down for several minutes, then sat up and walked off under his own power. Yahoo Sports and the LA Times live blog it syndicates reported he was headed into concussion protocol and likely done for the night; his status was still unresolved when the coaches spoke, and he did not return. Tuitele was flagged for targeting on review and ejected, though he is eligible to play Syracuse next week. The stand that tied the game also pulled a UCLA receiver and a Cal linebacker out of the quarter that decided it.
Then UCLA stopped throwing
From halftime on, UCLA ran 21 non-kneel snaps. Fourteen were runs and they went for 158 yards, 11.29 a carry, with eleven of the fourteen graded successful. Six were drop-backs and they netted minus seven yards: two completions worth five yards between them, two incompletions, two sacks, and a success rate of zero. UCLA took that split to its logical end in the fourth quarter. Thirteen snaps, one pass attempt, a third-and-14 incompletion to Mikey Matthews at 10:04, and eleven designed runs for 146 yards, three touchdowns and better than twelve points of expected value in a single quarter. The Bruins scored 45 points without a passing touchdown; all six came on the ground.
The lead came from the defense first. At 8:53, Ta'Shawn James picked off a pass that ricocheted off Ian Strong's hands near midfield and returned it 19 yards to the Cal 31. On the next snap, Wayne Knight ran 31 yards up the middle. James intercepted Sagapolutele again later in the quarter, on a throw into traffic with no receiver open, and Sagapolutele's postgame assessment was blunt: "The second one, that was completely on me." Counting a fumble lost on a sack, California turned it over three times, and UCLA started its average drive 19 yards closer to the end zone than the Bears did. That is the whole field-position story. Not punting, takeaways.
Historically, this is what a broken offense looks like
Here is why UCLA's half is worth more than a highlight package. Go through every FBS game from 2015 through 2025 and pull the teams whose second-half drop-backs netted zero or fewer yards on five or more attempts, in a game within a touchdown at halftime. There are 101 of them. They won 19 times. That is 18.8%, at an average defeat of 11.2 points. A dead passing game in the second half of a close game is, historically, the description of a team about to lose. UCLA's plus-21 second-half scoring margin would tie the best mark in the entire 369-game set of dead-drop-back second halves, and it beats every instance that started from a close halftime.
The same data says how UCLA escaped. Sort those 101 games by second-half rushing efficiency and the win rate climbs from 11.1% for the eighteen games under 3.0 yards a carry to 50% for the six at 8.0 or better. Only four of all 369 such halves featured a ground game running at UCLA's 11.29. The formula survives when the run game is an outlier and not otherwise, and an 11.29-yards-per-carry half is the least repeatable thing an offense can produce. A second lens makes the same point from the other direction. Teams tied entering the fourth quarter that then ran ten or more snaps and threw on 10% or fewer of them went 29-1 over eleven seasons, which sounds like a formula until you see who they were: eleven of the 30 were service academies or option programs, and not one had thrown on even 55% of its snaps through three quarters, Oklahoma in 2018 topping out at 53.8%. UCLA had thrown on 59.0%. The 29-1 is also partly backwards, since you only get ten fourth-quarter snaps and one throw if your drives are already sustaining and you have a lead to sit on. What is left is identity: in eleven seasons, no team walked away from a pass-first plan this completely from a tie.
The obvious explanation is that Nico Iamaleava got hurt, and the timeline refuses it. UCLA's last pass attempt came five snaps before the injury. At 5:04, on third-and-1, Iamaleava scrambled ten yards, was dragged down by the leg and fumbled, recovered it himself, then came up unable to put weight on the leg and was helped to the medical tent, with his younger brother Madden replacing him. UCLA had already run six straight times before that snap and ran five more after it for 85 yards and two scores. Bob Chesney named the injury afterward and waved off the panic.
He's good. He just got, like, this calf kind of got cleated at the end there, so he tried and it just kept cramping up because of the workout.
A cleated calf, then cramping, and Chesney said Iamaleava should be good to go moving forward. The quarterback's own account matched: "I tried to get back up to get back in the huddle, but I had to sit down for a little bit, and then I was good after I went to the sideline." Whether the ground game was a called plan, a read on Cal's front after the Tuitele ejection, or some of both, the box score cannot settle. It can settle that Iamaleava's calf was not the cause.
A 460-yard night that lived on one down
Zoom out to all 52 non-kneel snaps and a stranger shape appears. UCLA gained 337 of its 460 yards on first down: 27 snaps at 12.48 a pop, 74.1% successful, nearly a third of them explosive. Second down was the photographic negative, 13 snaps for 41 yards, 3.15 a play, no explosives at all. Eight of UCLA's eleven explosive plays came on first down and second down produced none. The engine was the first-down run, 18 carries for 229 yards, with Anthony Woods going 7 for 112 on first down alone and five different ball carriers averaging better than 5.6 a rush. Five of the six touchdowns came on first down, three of them from 31, 31 and 53 yards out on first-and-10.
That is not a small deviation from the norm. UCLA's 2025 team, a different staff but the only baseline Week 1 offers, averaged 4.85 yards on first down and took 40% of its yards there, and its best single first-down game all season was 6.97 a play. This was 12.48. Second down, at 3.15, came in well under that same team's 5.57, so the collapse there was not merely relative to a spectacular first down. The knock-on shows up in the places UCLA never visited: twelve third downs all night against California's twenty, and six red-zone snaps in a game it won by scoring 45.
Across 18,844 FBS team-games since 2015, only 61 look like this: at least 70% of yards on first down, 10-plus yards a play there, and second down under 4.0. Five or six a year, nationally. They went 36-25, a 59% win rate against a spread-implied expectation of 59.7% and 48.3% against the number, which is to say exactly par. The controlled comparison is the one that stings. Hold raw efficiency fixed between 6.5 and 8.5 yards a play, and the down-concentrated teams won 61.1% by an average of 7.4 points while the 4,982 balanced offenses at the identical yards-per-play won 75.8% by 13.8. Same yards a snap, fifteen points of win rate gone. The mechanism is volume, not finishing: the concentrated teams actually scored slightly more per 100 yards, because explosive plays score, and they ran nearly seven fewer snaps a game because drives died on second and third down. Sixteen of the 42 such games with 400-plus yards were losses.
California's offense only existed on third down
The Bears produced the inverse pathology, and it is the more alarming one. On first and second down California was successful on 27.4% of 63 snaps at 3.48 yards a play, worse than in any of its thirteen games in 2025, when the baseline was 42.8%. On third down the same offense was superb: 20 snaps, 220 yards, 11.0 a snap, 70% successful, 11 conversions. The long-yardage split is the strange part. On third-and-7-or-longer Cal went 6-for-11 at 13.91 yards a play, against a 2025 conversion rate of 26.7% in that spot. They went nearly pure drop-back on the money down, 80% pass and four runs in twenty, and the two biggest were Sagapolutele to Mason Mini for 26 on third-and-10 and to Strong for 49 on third-and-9. Twenty third downs is more than California faced in any game last season.
Call it the inverted offense, and California is now its extreme case: failing on the downs you choose and thriving on the down you are forced into. Using per-game splits back to 2014, bottom-quartile standard-down success plus top-5% passing-down success appears in 28 of 18,076 team-games. Those teams went 15-13 and still lost by an average of 4.75 points, which is the honest verdict on third-down heroics. Teams with an early-down day that bad normally win 21% of the time and lose by 16.7, so the rescue converts a blowout into a coin flip and takes you no further. Teams elite on passing downs and merely healthy on early downs won 90.9% of the time by 24 points. The early downs are the variable. The heroics do not carry either: in the next game, those teams' passing-down success fell from .568 to .331, which is league average, while their early downs rebounded to league average too, and zero of the 26 repeated the pattern. California's own 2019 team sits in that set. It won that night, watched the third-down magic evaporate the following week, and went 3-5 the rest of the way.
And then fourth down came
An offense that lives on third down has no answer for the one down that cannot be extended. California went 0-for-3 on fourth down for minus two total yards. The one that mattered came early in the fourth quarter at 24-24, fourth-and-3 at the UCLA 47. SI's Cal coverage is the only outlet carrying that sequence, including the botched center exchange by Ashton Rivera that lost four yards, so take both as attributed rather than settled. Lupoi defended the decision without blinking.
That was a call, I would go for that 10 out of 10 times, with the amount of time remaining there and where we were at.
He is right that the call was defensible. The problem was never the fourth down, it was that the offense underneath it had no floor. California ran 59 snaps at 5.88 yards a play through three quarters, then 27 for 90 in the fourth, 3.33 a play and negative expected value on the quarter. Sagapolutele's line reads 271 yards, two touchdowns and eight explosive plays, and his plus-11.0 expected points added is the reason this was a game at all. Both things are true at once, which is what makes California hard to read. Its box score will look fine on Monday and the tape will not.
Eight carries each, and no overlap at all
One more thing hides inside UCLA's 277 rushing yards, and it explains why the leaderboard misdescribes the night. Woods and Wayne Knight took exactly eight carries apiece, and in eight chances each their situations did not overlap once. All eight of Woods' runs came with ten or more yards to gain. He had no carries on third or fourth down, none with four or fewer to go, and never touched it inside the 10; his closest approach to the goal line was the 21. Knight was the entire short-yardage and goal-line package: five of UCLA's six runs needing four or fewer, all three of its third-down runs, and the only carry inside the five. The result inverts the box. Woods finished with 118 yards and two scores from 31 and 53 yards out, Knight with only 71 yards and three touchdowns, from 8, 31 and 4. Woods led UCLA in rushing. Knight was the one who finished drives.
Resist filing that as a permanent job description. In 41 comparable FBS team-games from 2024-25, two backs with near-identical carry counts, one gaining twice the yards and the other scoring more, the offense was overwhelming that night: 35-6, by an average of 20 points. But in the next game those two backs shared, the finisher out-scored the chunk back only 19.4% of the time, and over the rest of those seasons the chunk backs actually scored more per game. Those teams went .548 the rest of the way against their own .601 baseline. Knight's résumé argues the same: he carried 207 times for 1,373 yards at James Madison in 2025 and does not have a short-yardage ceiling. Woods took 40% of his entire 2025 rushing output in these eight carries and scored two rushing touchdowns after scoring none all of last season, when he was mostly a pass-catching back. Eight carries is a tiny sample. The split inside it is exact.
What Week 2 actually tests
Chesney's opening statement in his debut caught the shape of the night better than any stat did.
A lot of fun – it was a lot of fun. I think that was a battle. You're looking at that right before halftime, and there was a shot to open this up a little bit an then we threw an interception, and they go right down and you're like, 'All right, now what?' We get the ball back, so let's go do something exciting…
He is describing Kingston Lopa's interception at the Cal 13 with under a minute left in the half, and then what UCLA did with the answer: a 43-yard strike to Matthews on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, and Mateen Bhaghani's 38-yarder for a 24-17 lead at the break. UCLA answered its own worst moment inside twenty seconds of clock. That is worth remembering about this team.
The honest read on 45 points, though, is that UCLA found a Week 1 answer, not a Week 1 identity. The 30 teams that abandoned the pass from a fourth-quarter tie went 55.2% the following week and 56% the rest of the way, which is average. The teams with UCLA's one-down shape reverted to league-normal inside a single week, first-down average falling from 11.6 yards a play to 6.75 and second down climbing back to 6.91, and only one team-season in the whole set produced it twice. So the number to watch next week is not the first-down average, which is guaranteed to fall. It is second down, where UCLA gained 3.15 a play, below its own baseline, and the drop-back game, which netted negative yards after halftime and will not be rescued by 11 yards a carry twice. For California, the number is 27.4%. If early-down success climbs back toward last season's 42.8%, this reads as a bad plan on a loud night. If it does not, the third-down fireworks were a loan, and this was the first payment.
Historically similar games since 2019 — close margin, both offenses held far below norm — and how often that offense outperformed this level the following week.
Lupoi, for his part, went looking for the lesson before anyone asked him for one, which is the right instinct for a coach whose team just lost a quarter 21-0.
