Bryant vs. Army: Final Score & Recap

What we said before kickoff, and where it broke

We owe you our own number first. Our margin model made Army a three-point favorite with a 55.8 percent chance to win. The market made Army a 37.5-point favorite. Army won by 56, so the market missed by 18.5 points and we missed by 53.

We got the side on Army and nothing else, which is worth saying plainly. That margin model earns its keep against opening numbers by reading how teams have played common opponents, and in Week 1 against an FCS team there are no common opponents and no current-season form on either side. Our number called a coin flip with a lean. The market called a scrimmage. Read everything below knowing the projection was the weakest instrument on this desk Saturday, and that the rest comes from the 123 snaps Army and Bryant actually played.

The down Army never had to play

Start with a number no broadcast hands you: Army faced nine third downs. Not nine conversions, nine snaps on which third down existed at all, out of 70 from scrimmage. That is 12.9 percent of the night against 21.2 percent across all 815 plays Army ran in 2025. Third down mostly stopped arriving.

The odd part is that the few money downs Army did see are where the offense detonated. Yards per snap climbed with every down: 7.51 on first, 9.00 on second, 14.44 on third, and 30 on the single fourth-down snap of the night. In 2025 that curve ran the other way, 5.04 and 5.96 and 4.28 and 4.77, which is the normal shape, because third down is when a defense finally knows what is coming. Three of Army's eight touchdowns came on the ten snaps that were third or fourth down: Hellums from 27 on 3rd-and-7, Brady Anderson from 30 on 4th-and-3 at the Bryant 30, and Mundell's 66-yarder on 3rd-and-4 to open the third quarter. CFBD's advanced grades put Army's standard-downs success rate at .729, the 99.6th percentile of 24,716 FBS team-games since 2014.

Now keep it honest. Search eleven seasons for that exact shape, an offense that essentially never got behind the chains and was somehow more explosive on money downs than on schedule, and 114 team-games clear the bar, 86 of them with a joinable final score. The opponent is the whole story. Against an FBS defense, 59 games, the team won 90 percent of the time by an average of 29.3 points, then went .621 the next week and .668 the rest of the season. That version means something. Against an FCS defense, which is Army's case, 27 games, those teams went 27-0 by an average of 45 points, then .556 the next week and .488 the rest of the way. The .488 is below the control: 400 FBS teams that simply beat an FCS opponent in these seasons went .512 afterward. The efficiency did not travel either. Those 27 offenses graded .665 in the blowout, .452 across their own full seasons, and .454 the very next week.

Army keeps its own file on this. Nine of its 151 graded games since 2014 cleared the bar, eight of the nine against FCS teams, and Army went 6-3 in the games that followed, including 2019, when a 47-6 win over VMI at .703 was followed seven days later by a 21-point loss to Hawai'i. The structural reason is worth naming. An offense only gets a down-curve this inverted when the early-down blocking is so clean that third down stops arriving, and Army's nine prior instances say that condition tracks the opponent more than the offense. So the number that survives the week is the frequency, nine third downs in 70 snaps against a 173-in-815 baseline. The 16 yards a snap Army averaged on money downs rests on ten plays and estimates nothing.

Army's leading rusher carried the ball four times

Mundell finished with 105 yards and two touchdowns on four carries, 26 yards a touch, three of the four gaining 15 or more, all four to the perimeter. Godspower Nwawuihe led the team with 11 carries for 53 yards, eight of them tagged up the middle, and nobody else had more than seven. Ten different ball carriers appeared in the first half alone.

The real inversion is Hellums. In all five 2025 games whose play-by-play names a ball carrier, Hellums was Army's leading rusher, at 26, 23, 36, 30 and 12 attempts, a mean 49 percent of the parsed carries. Against Bryant he took 7 of 52, or 13.5 percent, and still scored twice. Across Army's 25 games in the official-box era the lead back's share of team carries has run from .268 to .672 and never fell as low as .22. Saturday it was .193.

I'm sure we'll use other guys at those positions so that we can find out who might give us the best chance.

Monken was talking about his linebackers three days before kickoff, but the same instinct showed up in the backfield: 16 Black Knights got a carry. The history says be careful before calling 16 carriers a plan. Measure carry dispersion in the official box since 2024 and a 50-carry night with the lead back at 11 or fewer happens in only 16 of 446 team-games. In the 28 such games with a joinable FBS result, the teams went 24-4 by an average margin of 36.5, and 23 of the 28 were won by 25 or more, which is the tell. Army's carry dispersion is what a rout looks like from the inside, not a plan that produces one.

It also evaporated. The very next week those same offenses handed the ball back to one man 37 percent of the time, averaged 4.48 yards a carry instead of 6.13, and won by 3.4 instead of 36.5. Narrow to Army's exact situation, Week 1 or 2, an FCS opponent, 40-plus carries, lead back at 22 percent or less, and ten games survive from 2024 and 2025. All ten were won, by an average of 54.8 points, with Army's 56 sitting dead center. What those ten teams did afterward was a coin flip: Indiana went 9-1, BYU and North Texas 10-2, while UCF went 3-8 and Kansas 4-7. The closest structural comp is Air Force in Week 1 of 2025, a service academy that spread 51 carries over 12 backs against an FCS team, won by 36, and then finished 3-8. Five winning records, five losing ones, so the opener carried essentially no information either way.

The pass this offense doesn't throw

Army threw 13 times, which is not the story. When it threw is. In 2025 Army threw more as the down got later: 8.8 percent on first, 16.4 on second, 18.5 on third. Against Bryant the curve ran backwards, 22.9 percent on first down, 16.0 on second, 11.1 on third. On first down alone Army threw at 2.6 times its 2025 rate, eight passes where three was the baseline. And the throws funneled onto No. 27, S. Howard. He drew 5 of the 13 targets and caught three for 52 yards, including a deep completion down the left side on 2nd-and-1 in the first quarter, caught at the Bryant 40 and out of bounds at the 30 for 33 yards. Add four carries for 63 and Howard led Army with 115 scrimmage yards on seven touches, more than Mundell's 105 or Hellums' 87.

Rebuild every scrimmage snap from 2015 through 2025 and that inversion is almost always a distress signal. Isolate the option universe, 40 team-seasons and 508 games across Air Force, Army, Navy, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech, then find the games where the first-down pass rate at least doubled the season norm while third-down passing fell below it. Thirteen matches in eleven years. Those teams went 3-10, lost by an average of 4.9 points, and went 2-13 against the spread. In 11 of the 13 the offense was trailing, on average, at the moment of those first-down throws, and in 10 of 13 it graded below its own season norm. Teams throw early when the run fails. And the cupcake explanation does not hold either: across 45 games against FCS opposition those same option offenses threw on first down at a 0.144 rate, identical to their rate against FBS teams.

Army's ground game had not failed. Its first three first-down passes came at 0-0, 7-0 and 14-0, and the offense graded 0.686 in expected points added per play, far above any full-season figure Army has posted in four years. That puts this game in the rare branch, ahead and throwing anyway, which is 2 of the 13 in the wide set and five games in the tightest comparison, where teams went 4-1 by an average of 19.4 points. Five games is too few to call predictive. What is unanimous in those five is the follow-through: the first-down pass rate collapsed the very next week every time, and stayed below the analog-game rate for the rest of the season every time. The honest expectation is that Bryant was a week to install and rep something against an opponent who could not punish a mistake. If Army's first-down pass rate is back near nine percent against a defense that can, this was a scrimmage with a scoreboard. If it holds near 20, no option team in eleven seasons has done it.

A ceiling, not a wall

The defensive number everyone will quote is 165 yards. The better one is that Bryant moved the ball snap to snap at almost exactly its normal rate: 34.0 percent of its plays were successful against a 34.8 percent baseline, with first-down success identical to the decimal at 36.8. Army stopped Bryant at or behind the line on 39.6 percent of snaps, which is Bryant's own 37.5 percent norm. The Bulldogs were behind the chains less often than usual, 48.5 percent of their second and third downs against 60.9 last season. What vanished was the tail. Gains of ten yards or more fell from 21.9 percent of Bryant's snaps to 5.7, three all night, and the average gain on any snap that gained anything dropped from 8.72 yards to 5.88. Bryant's longest play was 24 yards. In the baseline it was 72.

The two inside linebackers will both be first-time starters and really playing significant snaps for the very first time. The lack of experience, that's a little unnerving, I think, in any position. But they're very eager. They're good tacklers. They're good in space.

That is a fairly precise prediction of what happened: a defense that tackled everything inside ten yards. Call it a ceiling rather than a wall, because Bryant's offense kept functioning and simply could not hit anything. Across 2014 through 2025, defenses that produced this shape, explosiveness crushed, efficiency untouched, no unusual rate of tackles for loss, appear in 2.3 percent of team-games, 446 of them, and went 69.5 percent with a plus-12.7 average margin. The 259 defenses that took away efficiency too went 88.4 percent at plus-26.7, allowing 8.1 points. A ceiling is worth roughly half a wall, and in the 222 ceiling games decided by 14 points or fewer the ceiling defense went 51.8 percent, a coin flip. It does not carry, either: those defenses repeated the trick in 2.5 percent of their remaining games against a 2.3 percent base rate, and won 54.1 percent the following week. Army has produced this shape four times since 2014, against MTSU, Villanova, Delaware State and UConn, and every one came in the season's first three weeks against a non-power opponent. Army's fair test is the first opponent with a functioning downfield passing game.

Bryant's night ended one third down at a time

Do not write Bryant off from 165 yards, because the failure was specific rather than total. The Bulldogs converted three of their first seven third downs, including quarterback B. Myer's 24-yard completion to K. Williams on 3rd-and-7, the longest play they had all night and the throw that set up their only points. From that snap forward they went 0-for-7 and lost a net of four yards across those seven plays, six of which gained nothing or less, one of them a ten-yard sack by D. Stowers on 3rd-and-17. All seven were passes. Their average third-down distance rose from 5.7 yards in the first half to 9.4 in the second, so the down got longer and the answer got narrower at the same time. Even the drive that 24-yarder set up never cashed: three snaps from the Army 10 for minus one yard, then Nicholas Stoyanovich's 28-yard field goal that cut it to 28-3, and that was Bryant's entire scoring column.

That profile, early downs working and money downs dead with negative expected points overall, shows up in 4.6 percent of team-games since 2014, and it is close to the most losing shape in the data. Those 868 teams went 99-769, scored 11.3 points against a 27.9 baseline, and lost by an average of 22.3. The 224 of them that were also 21-point-or-worse underdogs won one game out of 224. The instructive split sits right beside it: teams equally negative in expected points who still converted money downs scored 15.1 points and won 19.3 percent, while teams that failed on both down types scored 7.7 and won 5.2. Keeping the early downs alive without the third downs bought Bryant about four points over total collapse and cost it about four more than converting would have.

But it is a night, not an identity. In their very next game those teams' money-down success rebounded to .296, essentially the league average, and they scored 24.9 points and lost by 3.5. Bryant's own 2025 norms say the same, .263 money-down success across twelve games against the .190 it managed here. The number to watch is whether those second-half third-down distances stay near nine yards against opponents who are not 37.5-point favorites.

What Week 1 can and can't tell you

Two things this game settled. Dawson Jones, whom Monken named the kicker three days earlier because "Dawson's been much more consistent and really has earned that spot," handled the job and hit a 37-yarder. And neither Army nor Bryant turned the ball over, which is at least a start on the goal Monken named before kickoff: "I'd like to go through an entire season and never turn the ball over. And it's possible. It's hard to do."

Everything else about Army is a question with a date on it. Watch whether Hellums' share of the carries returns to the 45 to 50 percent that defined his 2025, because history says it does, and if it does not, the committee stops being a blowout artifact and becomes a change. Watch whether Army's first-down passing survives a defense that can punish it. And watch those two first-time starting linebackers against an offense that can throw over them, because taking away the big play is the easier half of a good defensive night and Bryant could not test the harder half. Army faced third down nine times in 70 snaps. At its own 2025 rate of 21.2 percent, 70 snaps produce fifteen. The night Army plays fifteen is the night we find out what any of this was.
