SMU vs Florida State Prediction, Picks & Odds — Sep 7, 2026

Florida State's portal math made it a home underdog

SMU won this matchup by 26 in 2024 and enters as a road favorite; the gap is mostly what Florida State's roster lost, not what it did last week.

SMU has not taken a snap this season and is still favored on the road. The 7.7-point gap between these teams is largely a roster accounting problem: transfer traffic alone is worth five points of SMU's margin, more than any other single factor. Florida State's 26-point loss in the 2024 meeting is the last time this matchup was settled on grass, and neither roster looks much like the ones that played it.

The range of outcomes for this game. Each bar is how often the final margin lands in that range — the more it leans toward SMU, the more likely SMU wins.

Forty-four out, twenty-two in, and a defense to reassemble

Florida State sent 44 players into the portal and brought 22 back, a net of minus-69 recruiting stars. Kevin Wynn on the defensive line and Ja'Bril Rawls at corner were four-star pieces on a unit that already ranked #69 against the pass and #71 against the run — near the bottom third of the sport on both. Xavier Chaplin, a four-star tackle from Auburn, is a real upgrade at a premium spot; Jordan Sanders and Nehemiah Chandler arrive from Texas State and South Alabama to fill starting jobs.

SMU's ledger is negative too — 26 out against 15 in — but the shape differs. Losing Kyron Chambers at corner and Omari Abor off the edge hurts a defense built on disruption, and the replacements are aimed at exactly those holes: Yannick Smith, a four-star receiver from East Carolina, and edge rusher Marques White. Position-weighted, SMU's net loss comes to three stars against Florida State's 85. One side churned depth; the other subtracted starters.

Transfer portal — roster turnover into the season

The #18 incoming class with 11 blue-chips is why this reads as a reload rather than a teardown — the talent underneath Florida State is still elite. But freshmen rarely settle September, and this defense has to hold up now, with new corners and a new interior, against an offense that returns its quarterback and both of its most efficient receivers. That timing mismatch is most of the number.

Each ingredient of our projection and the side it favors — bars toward SMU are why it's the pick (home field is counted separately).

The opener answered the run question and nothing else

Florida State opened with a 34-17 win over New Mexico State, scoring on six of nine possessions with a single three-and-out and 48.2 yards per drive. Ousmane Kromah's 115 yards on 14 touches is the piece that travels: the #9 rushing offense returns 28% of last season's ground production and he is most of it. Ashton Daniels threw 27 times for 202 yards, which establishes his workload without settling the questions around him.

Last time out — the most recent evidence on each side

New Mexico State never pressed the part of Florida State that SMU will, so the preseason baseline still governs here, and the baseline points at the secondary: #69 against the pass a year ago, minus a four-star corner, playing in front of a returning pass rush whose leading man had two sacks. Kevin Jennings projects for 234 to 334 passing yards against that group, with an 87% chance he throws a touchdown.

SMU's passing game is the one rank that still describes the roster

SMU returns 67% of last season's passing production, which makes the #22 pass offense a live number rather than a museum piece. Jennings has four FBS seasons and +0.259 career EPA per play behind him, throwing to Yamir Knight (+0.56 on a 15% target share) and Jalen Cooper (+0.46 on 12%) — those are efficiency numbers, not volume artifacts. The crossing against Florida State's pass defense is a 0.7-standard-deviation edge, the widest on the board.

Last season's units, ranked nationally (opponent-adjusted PPA). These ranks belong to last year's rosters: SMU returns 67% of last season's passing production and 1% of its rushing production. Florida State returns 39% of last season's passing production and 28% of its rushing production.

The other half of SMU's offense barely exists on paper. One percent of last season's rushing production is back, and the unit ranked #73 even with all of it. Dramekco Green projects for 14 to 32 rushing yards and Derrick McFall for 10 to 28 — volume bands that small mean nobody has claimed the job yet. Jennings isn't the first option so much as the entire plan, and Florida State can build a week of practice around that.

Projected production, as ranges. A player's VOLUME is projectable; his per-play efficiency measurably is not, so these are bands rather than numbers.

Daniels' 128-to-242-yard band is wide because one start is the entire current record. Duce Robinson, back from a 26% target share at +0.66 EPA per play, projects for 35 to 111 receiving yards and is the only Florida State receiver with a real claim against a defense that intercepted 17 passes. Micahi Danzy (26 to 84) and Kromah (26 to 73) fill the edges, and Samuel Singleton is the likeliest Florida State scorer at 46%.

SMU's takeaway defense is the half nobody quotes

Seventeen interceptions ranked SMU #7 nationally and 34 sacks put it #17, a top-20 disruption profile on both counts. Brandon Miyazono is back with two sacks, seven breakups, an interception and 40 tackles, alongside corners Jaelyn Davis-Robinson and William Nettles. Winning the giveaway battle wins about three-quarters of all games, so takeaways only become an argument if they repeat; enough of the ball production here returns to suggest part of it will.

Last season's defense — disruption and takeaways (national rank)

Florida State's clearest strength runs straight into SMU's: the #9 rushing offense against the #5 rushing defense, a collision that still tilts to SMU by 0.4 standard deviations. Kromah and Singleton give Florida State the personnel to test it honestly. If that lane closes, the game funnels to Daniels' arm, which is the exact script a secondary with 17 interceptions is built to punish.

Going the other way, Florida State's disruption is middling, 31 sacks (#28) and 12 interceptions (#31); and the returning slice is thin: Daniel Lyons at two sacks, Blake Nichelson and AJ Cottrill contributing tackles more than havoc. Pressure has to come from portal additions who haven't played at this level, or Jennings gets the clean pocket that turned the 2024 meeting into a 26-point result.

Florida State's Case starts with the venue

Home field is worth roughly four and a half points against a 2.5-point number, so the building does most of Florida State's work before anyone lines up. The projection gives a one-score finish a little better than a one-in-three chance and Florida State a 31% win probability, not a formality. What it needs is Kromah holding the run game upright against the #5 rush defense, Robinson near the top of his range, and nothing handed to a defense that takes the ball away.

SpreadWe project SMU by 8, past the 2 line — SMU to cover. A preseason caveat, honestly: this early, the market has genuinely better information than any projection built on last season's rosters — returning-production and depth-chart data aren't fully published yet. Our number is on the record; treat the gap as a disagreement to track, not an edge to bet.
TotalNo validated lean. We project 48 combined points against a 54 line, but our totals projection doesn't yet have a graded track record, so we don't publish a lean on it.
Key numbersThe margin lands exactly on 3 about 6% of the time and on 7 about 6% — the two numbers that decide the most bets. With the line sitting on 3, that push/one-point risk is live: buying the half-point through 3 is worth more here than usual, and a pick'em-style teaser leg through it carries real value.
Betting angle

SMU wins this the way it is built: Jennings inside his 234-to-334 range with Knight and Cooper working a bottom-half pass defense, and a front good enough to make Florida State one-dimensional. The projected 28-20 is not a comfortable margin, and the projection clears 2.5 in only about 61% of outcomes, so a single lost turnover battle changes the answer.

Florida State's counter is a defense that has been rebuilt and not yet tested, Chandler and Sanders holding up on the perimeter, Lyons finding a second gear as a rusher. Everything else is secondary. Whether the new secondary can make Jennings work for his yards is the one question that decides the afternoon.
