Western Michigan vs Michigan Prediction, Picks & Odds — Sep 5, 2026
Western Michigan's secondary is back; its pass rush isn't
Western Michigan ranked 11th against the pass and Michigan ranked 92nd throwing it, but the edge rushers who made that coverage work are gone.
What follows is the preview as it was published before kickoff — unedited.
Box score, drives and the model's numbers →The last time these programs met, in 2021, Michigan won by 33, and the gap underneath that scoreline has not closed: Michigan's incoming class carries 12 blue-chip signees and ranks 12th, Western Michigan's carries none and ranks 98th. Michigan projects to win 30-18 with a 78% chance. The reason to keep watching past halftime is that Western Michigan's 11th-ranked pass defense lines up directly across from a Michigan passing game that finished 92nd.
The range of outcomes for this game. Each bar is how often the final margin lands in that range — the more it leans toward Michigan, the more likely Michigan wins.
Coverage is the one place Western Michigan wins
Western Michigan's pass defense against Michigan's passing offense is the only unit crossing on the board that points toward the visitors, worth 0.8 standard deviations. The coverage half of that 11th-place finish is genuinely intact: Joshua Franklin (nine pass breakups, 50 tackles), Jarvarius Sims (four breakups, 58 tackles) and safety Joey Pope (two interceptions) all return, so last year's ranking still describes the players who take the field Saturday.
Bryce Underwood projects for 130 to 260 passing yards with a 59% chance of a touchdown, a band wide enough to hold both a comfortable afternoon and a stalled one. Andrew Marsh, who produced Michigan's best per-target efficiency on a 19% target share, projects for 36 to 115 receiving yards, with Hogan Hansen back at tight end on a 14% share. Michigan has to take those throws against Franklin and Sims rather than assume them.
The 38 sacks left with the edge rushers
Western Michigan's coverage was funded by pressure: 38 sacks, sixth nationally, which is what buys three defensive backs an extra beat downfield. The front is exactly where the roster thinned. Four-star edge Popeye Williams is gone, Isaiah Street left for Ohio, and cornerback Fitzroy Ledgister departed as well. An 11th-ranked pass defense missing its two primary edge rushers is a claim about last year's front seven, not a description of this one.
Ahmed Tounkara arrives from Ohio State and Austin Alexander from North Carolina, credible additions at this level, though Western Michigan's ledger of 14 in and 13 out grades as a net loss at minus three once position weighting is applied. If Underwood stays clean, a 92nd-ranked passing offense with time in the pocket becomes a functional one, and the single structural advantage Western Michigan brings to Ann Arbor stops mattering.
Jordan Marshall is carrying 59% of a run game
Michigan ranked 17th running the ball against a Western Michigan run defense at 42nd, a half-standard-deviation edge and the narrower of the two mismatches on the board. It is also the one that attacks Western Michigan where its returning production is thinnest: the Broncos bring back three defensive backs and none of the edge players who helped produce 76 tackles for loss, 32nd nationally.
Only 59% of Michigan's rushing production returns. Jordan Marshall is the part that does, at 37% of last season's carries and positive efficiency, and he projects for 46 to 130 rushing yards with a 61% chance of a touchdown, with Bryson Kuzdzal behind him at 25 to 72. The width of that 46-to-130 band is what it looks like when one back inherits a top-20 rush ranking that departed carries helped build.
Michigan's ordinary pass defense added three Utah starters
Michigan's pass defense ranked 57th and generated 28 sacks, 41st nationally, which is ordinary for a team laying 27.5. What it did well was take the ball away: 13 interceptions, 20th in the country, with Jyaire Hill, Mason Curtis and Jacob Oden each picking off a pass and all three back. Salesi Moa and Smith Snowden arrive at corner from Utah with edge John Henry Daley, covering four-star corner Jayden Sanders leaving for Notre Dame.
Neither quarterback is the reason for the number
Broc Lowry brings three FBS seasons at +0.150 EPA per play; Underwood brings one at +0.174. That 0.024 separation is not an edge, and both jobs are settled. Western Michigan's passing problem is structural instead: the Broncos return 100% of a passing offense that finished 125th of 136, and Lowry's projection of 78 to 150 yards with a 43% touchdown chance is what full continuity of that unit actually buys.
Each ingredient of our projection and the side it favors — bars toward Michigan are why it's the pick (home field is counted separately).
How Western Michigan gets to plus-27.5
Western Michigan does not need to win, and the projection gives Michigan only a 16% chance of covering 27.5. The path is possession length: Jalen Buckley at 36 to 101 rushing yards on a 29% rush share, with Baylin Brooks (18 to 33 receiving yards) and Aveion Chenault (12 to 28) converting third downs on small target shares rather than producing volume. Every drive Buckley extends is a drive Jordan Marshall never touches.
What has to happen
Michigan needs Marshall near the top of his 46-to-130 range to cover the 41% of last season's rushing production that left, and needs Underwood in the middle of his band against Franklin, Sims and Pope. Western Michigan needs Tounkara and Alexander to replace 38 sacks worth of pressure, because three returning defensive backs cannot hold up alone, and it needs Buckley producing enough first downs to hold the possession count down.
