What we projected, and where we were wrong

Our margin model went into Saturday night with Arizona by about six and a 62 percent chance to win. The market said Arizona by 32.5. That is a 26-point disagreement, and it is worth saying plainly which side was closer: the market was, because Arizona won by 28. On raw margin this was one of the model's worst nights of 2026, and the reason is not mysterious. A Week 1 game against an FCS opponent is the least-calibrated situation it faces, with no shared opponents and no 2026 snaps on either roster to lean on.

Because the model saw a modest edge instead of a rout, its lean was to take the points with Northern Arizona, and Arizona missed the number by four and a half. The two edges the projection can actually be graded against both showed up in Arizona's box score: it won the per-play efficiency battle decisively, plus 0.22 expected points per snap against minus 0.23, and it started an average drive about ten yards closer to the end zone. Those are the ingredients of a comfortable Arizona win, not a four-touchdown one. The rest of the margin came from where Arizona's possessions began, and that is the last story here.

The down where it broke

Northern Arizona's problem was never third down. It was that nothing ever started clean. Nineteen first-down snaps produced 27 yards, 1.4 a play. Three of Arizona's five sacks of Ty Pennington came on 1st-and-10, and none at all came on second down. Take away Pennington's 37-yard throw to Nassim Isaac in the third quarter and the other 18 first-down snaps add up to minus 10 yards.

Everything downstream inherited that math. The average second down was 2nd-and-12.5, the average third down 3rd-and-11.4. Northern Arizona threw on 12 of its 14 third downs and on all three of its fourth downs, went 0-for-3 on fourth, and twice stalled in Arizona territory, at the 43 in the first quarter and at the 30 in the third. Then the shape of the offense inverted completely: those 14 third downs were 27 percent of Northern Arizona's snaps and produced 61 percent of its yards. Pennington threw for 118 of the team's 193 total yards on third down alone, against a defense that had stopped attacking and dropped into coverage. Those 118 yards bought four first downs.

That inversion is the strange part of Northern Arizona's night, and it is measurable. Across roughly 25,700 team-games against FBS opposition from 2014 through 2025, standard-down efficiency beat passing-down efficiency 86.8 percent of the time. Northern Arizona's own history says the same: across its 62 other games in the advanced table, its standard downs run about 18 points of success rate better than its passing downs. On Saturday they ran 11 points worse. Only 121 team-games in that 11-season pool pair a standard-down collapse this severe with the inversion, about one in every 210, and of the 89 with a final score those teams went 6-83. Narrow to the ones whose runs were also stopped at or behind the line at least 40 percent of the time, as Northern Arizona's were on 44 percent of its carries, and it is 23 games, 0-23, at an average margin of minus 44.

The same comps carry the consolation. In that historical set, 88 of those offenses came back the following week at a standard-down success rate of .459 against a league mean of .466, and exactly one of the 88 ever repeated the inversion later that season. Northern Arizona did not have a broken offense on Saturday; it had one Arizona front it could not block, for one afternoon. The 10 favorites in that group went 4-6, which is the whole difference: a good team absorbs a collapse like this, and Northern Arizona, a heavy underdog on the road, could not. The trap the comps expose is the third-down yardage, because the pattern group covered only 21 percent of the time, precisely because chunk plays that begin 11 yards behind the sticks do not become drives. One caveat worth naming: 32 of the 121 qualifying teams were FCS programs like Northern Arizona, so the pool is weighted toward mismatches by construction. First down is the only number that predicts anything for Northern Arizona in Big Sky play.

Five sacks and minus seven

The instrument doing the breaking was Arizona's front. Five sacks, its most since the Hawaii game last season, and the minus 7 team rushing yards that came with them. Chase Kennedy took two and a half of the sacks and two and a half tackles for loss by himself. Quinn Olson picked off Pennington in the third quarter. Brent Brennan's line afterward was short: "We showed up ready to play."

One back, nowhere to go

When the ground disappears, an offense shrinks to whatever it can still complete, and Northern Arizona's shrank to Quran Gossett. He took 11 of the team's 16 charted carries for 20 yards, and by our parse of the play text he was also the most-targeted receiver on his own team, roughly eight of the 31 targets we can name. Every one of the eight is tagged short left or short right, with not one downfield look. Four of them fell incomplete, and two of the catches lost yardage. Between carries and targets, Gossett was the ball carrier or the intended receiver on about 36 percent of Northern Arizona's snaps, and the whole of it came to 31 yards on 15 touches. Target counts from play text are approximate by convention, but Gossett's 11 carries for 20 yards are official and match the verified totals exactly.

Funneling an offense through a single back is not, by itself, how teams lose: in the two seasons of official box logs available to us, 2024 and 2025, a team's leading rusher was also its leading receiver in 153 of 6,658 team-games, and the 95 with a scoreable result went 42-53. What separates them is the ground under him. When that back averaged better than 4.5 yards a carry his team won 55 percent of the time; at 3.5 or less, 20 percent. In the tier at 2.5 or worse, five games, the only winner was the only favorite, and the four underdogs went 0-4. Gossett's 2.07 yards per touch would sit below all 95. Five games prove nothing, but they point where the rest of the night points: this was not a designed feature that misfired, it was the last throw available to Northern Arizona. None of its 2025 volume receivers drew a named target here, not Kolbe Katsis, not Isaiah Eastman, not Jayson Raines. The consolation in that historical set is that the low-efficiency group played .516 ball the rest of the way, and the fix, in every version of it, was upstream of Gossett.

I'm disappointed in the outcome of the game and the overall play of our football team. We didn't play our best football tonight and a lot of credit goes to Arizona. Great effort by our defense. We settled down defensively in the second half.

The thing that actually changed for Arizona

Fifita's 262 yards and two touchdowns were the headline, and they were not the departure. Across all 39 Arizona dropbacks the offense produced +0.13 expected points per attempt, under its own 2025 norm of +0.20, dragged down by the two giveaways through the air. The Arizona passing game was fine. It was not new.

The run blocking was new, and historically so. Thirty-one designed carries, 198 yards, 6.39 a pop, Kedrick Reescano in for two scores, and one carry, one, stopped at or behind the line. Arizona's 2025 stuff rate was 18.7 percent and its best single game across 13 tries was 4.2 percent, so Saturday's 3.2 percent is lower than anything the offense managed all of last season. Its line-yards figure of 4.41 ties the season high it set in Week 11 against Kansas. Pair those two conditions and you get 63 team-games out of nearly 24,700 since 2014, about one in 390.

It is also the least repeatable number Arizona produced. Game to game, stuff rate correlates with itself at about r=0.12, and its within-season split-half reliability is 0.37 against 0.61 for offensive success rate. In all 39 historical cases with a next game the effect was gone within a week: those offenses went from a 1.0 percent stuff rate in the analog game to 16.9 percent the following Saturday, statistically identical to their own rest-of-season 16.4. One in 20 repeated it. Arizona's own precedent is the cleanest version: after the Kansas game that produced this same line-yards figure, it went to Cincinnati, got 25.6 percent of its runs stuffed, and won 30-24 anyway. Two things cut against filing all of this under an FCS discount for Arizona. It played FCS Weber State in 2025 and was stuffed on 16.2 percent of its carries, so the opponent alone does not manufacture a 3.2, and the passing EPA argues against the theory that light boxes did it. The honest projection from those 39 analogs, who settled at a 16.4 percent stuff rate against a 19.3 league mean, is a slightly better than average run-blocking team rather than a historic one. If the run game is fixed, the tell at BYU is not another 6.4 a carry. It is a stuff rate under about 12 percent.

Two throws over the top, both from the edge of the red zone

Of 36 depth-tagged Arizona attempts, two were tagged deep. Both were Fifita, both deep left, both on 1st-and-10, and both were touchdowns: 20 yards to Spivey from the NAU 20 in the first quarter, 21 yards to Phelps from the NAU 21 in the second. A third, thrown by Anderson in the fourth quarter, came back on an Arizona holding penalty. The other 34 tagged throws were short and produced no scores. For Arizona that is a strange place to take a shot. In the six 2025 games whose play text carries depth tags, its deep attempts were launched from an average of 52 yards out and made up 12 percent of all attempts, and exactly one of the 24 scored.

The efficiency table describes the same night from the other end. Arizona graded a .608 offensive success rate, the 97th percentile of every FBS team-game since 2014, on .933 explosiveness, the 9th percentile: constant movement, almost no chunk plays, 520 yards, 35 points. Only 152 team-games in nearly 24,700 have combined those two things, and the 130 with results won 82 percent of the time. But 84 percent of them were already favored, on average by more than two touchdowns, and against FCS opposition specifically the group won 96 percent by an average of 34. This is not an upset engine. It is what a heavy favorite's afternoon looks like when an overmatched Northern Arizona defense concedes everything underneath. Explosiveness in those comps snapped back to league average the very next week, and their rest-of-season record was indistinguishable from teams with the same efficiency and a working deep ball. What the number does say is that a team producing 520 yards this way does not have a broken vertical game. It had an unnecessary one. Whether those two shots from inside the NAU 21 were a called menu or just where the coverage broke, two throws cannot say.

Why 35-7 isn't quite a 35-7

Set aside the two clock-kill possessions and Arizona had 11 chances. On the five that began inside 60 yards from the end zone it scored four touchdowns; on the six that began farther out, one. Four of its five touchdown drives started no deeper than its own 43. The third quarter is the cleanest illustration: three possessions beginning 74, 70 and 63 yards from the goal line produced nine snaps, 12 total yards and three punts, while the two touchdown drives in the same quarter started at the 50 and the NAU 32. That third quarter is the stretch Wright meant about settling down.

Six drives is noise, and the history says treat it as noise. Across 178 comparable team-games since 2014 the long-field touchdown rate snapped from 11 percent back to 27 percent within a week, right at the league norm. But those teams also won 81.5 percent of the games in which they did it and then went 53 percent the following week, and against margin-matched peers, the ones that won by 10 to 20 points this way went 49.5 percent the rest of the season while ordinary 10-to-20-point winners went 56.4. Same scoreboard, worse future. What makes it worth a second glance rather than a shrug is that Arizona's 2025 offense sat in the 6th percentile for field-position dependence, scoring at essentially the same rate from anywhere across 141 drives. Saturday was a departure from the Arizona baseline, not a return to it. A 32.5-point favorite that goes 1-for-6 from beyond its own 40 and fails to cover has not told you much about whether it can drive the field, because it barely had to.

What actually carries to next week

Arizona also gave the ball away three times, its most in two years. Giovanni Richardson caught eight passes for 96 yards, the most productive receiving line in the game, and fumbled at the NAU 10 to end a 70-yard drive, with Jahaad Fort forcing it and recovering it. Matthew Cooks forced and recovered another from Antwan Roberts in the fourth quarter. The third giveaway was Anderson's interception, the one that became the only Northern Arizona touchdown. Its own best chance to make a game of it died on a 34-yard field goal that drifted wide right at the end of the first half.

So the ledger before BYU. Our pregame number of Arizona by six was too small and the market's 32.5 was closer, though the lean it produced was the right one. The pass rush is the finding most likely to hold, because it broke Northern Arizona's first down rather than its money downs, and that is a mismatch rather than a hot afternoon. The run blocking is the finding least likely to survive contact, the noisiest number on the sheet, gone within a week in all 39 historical cases we can check. Arizona's deep ball was switched off and looks fine. And a .608 success rate will not repeat against a Big 12 defense, with Arizona's own 2025 baseline at .427.
