The 28-0 run that turned a 16-6 grind into a 44-19 win came from scoring before the field could squeeze, a shape that has won 26 of 32 times before and told those teams almost nothing about their offense.
Purdue snapped the ball eleven times inside the Indiana State 20 in the first half and gained nineteen yards on those snaps. That is the whole first half in one line. Fame Ijeboi had already broken a 63-yard touchdown run, a nifty cutback and a couple of great downfield blocks, and a holding flag took it off the board and handed the drive back to the kicker. Purdue Never Fixed Its Red Zone. It Just Stopped Visiting
The 28-0 run that turned a 16-6 grind into a 44-19 win came from scoring before the field could squeeze, a shape that has won 26 of 32 times before and told those teams almost nothing about their offense.
What our model saw, and why it had nothing to add
We usually open these with the projection. This week the projection earned no credit. Walking in, our margin model made Indiana State a one-point favorite and called the game a 51.9% coin flip, which is not a brave contrarian read. It is an absence of information: Week 1, no 2026 form for either side, and an FCS opponent our ratings barely know. The market said Purdue by 35.5.
Purdue won by 25, so the market was far closer than we were, and the fact that our side of the number cashed is not something we get to claim. We do not project totals, so we will not grade the 55.5 either. What the night did confirm is the shape a Big Ten roster should impose on an FCS one. Purdue averaged .372 expected points added per play to Indiana State's .008, stopped 32% of Indiana State's designed runs at or behind the line, and had 5% of its own runs stuffed. Those are results, not forecasts.
Purdue never fixed the red zone. It skipped it.
After halftime, Purdue snapped the ball inside the Indiana State 20 exactly three times. All three were touchdowns. Look one step further out and the pattern gets stranger: every Purdue touchdown drive in the second half scored on its first snap inside the 25. Ijeboi from the 1. Browne to Tra'Mar Harris from the 7. Browne to Asaad Waseem from the 18, on 2nd-and-1. The Boilermakers did not win the compressed field. Purdue never played a down in it that was not already a score.
Halftime adjustment is the convenient explanation, and Purdue's play log does not support it. The Boilermakers called their usual red-zone game in the first half, running on 63.6% of those snaps against their own 2025 rate of 58.6%. It simply did not work: one successful snap in eleven, 9.1%, against a prior-year success rate of 41.4% in the same zone. The chunk plays did not change either, seven explosive gains before halftime and six after. What changed was where they died. The average Purdue explosive play ended at the Indiana State 34 in the first half and at the Indiana State 15 in the second. Tempo had nothing to do with it: Purdue ran zero no-huddle snaps in the third quarter and four in the entire game. Four first-half scoring drives took 42 plays to produce 16 points. The three third-quarter touchdown drives covered 62, 48 and 80 yards on thirteen plays, 14.6 a snap.
He said that things seemed slow to him tonight. He said he has to be a better self-starter to start the game.
What that shape has done, 32 times before
Strip the names off and this becomes a question you can ask of eleven seasons: a team whose first half produced at least three drives finishing inside the opponent 20 but no more than one touchdown, and whose second half then produced three or more offensive touchdowns on fifteen or fewer plays at twelve-plus yards a play. Purdue is an exact fit. The stalled first half by itself is common, 1,400 of 25,711 team-games since 2014, and only 22% of those answered with three second-half touchdowns at all. The full version, the stall followed by the sprint, shows up 40 times, 32 of them with a result on file. Those 32 went 26-6, average margin +10.6, against a 50.3% baseline for every team that stalled the same way before halftime. They covered 21 of 32. Michigan's 41-17 win over Penn State in 2022 sits in that set, and so does Texas winning 34-24 at Alabama in 2023.
The useful comparison is the control group: 223 teams that stalled identically and then answered the grinding way, long drives at 9.6 yards a play. They won 73% by an average of +10.7. Identical margin. Skipping the red zone bought Purdue speed, not points, and it removed the need to be good there rather than making anybody good there. What happened next is the honest expectation. Those offenses converted 74.1% of their red-zone-finishing drives into touchdowns before the comp game, 57.7% in it, and 76.1% the week after, a number that snapped back without anyone visibly solving anything. Two cautions before leaning on any of it: all six losses in the set came against opponents who scored 33 or more, meaning the big plays could not outrun a shootout, and only five of the 32 came in Week 1, with just two against FCS opposition.
Good teams find ways to self-correct, and I thought that was a good sign for this team, at this point in the year, to be able to do that and go out and execute in the third quarter.
Two newcomers, and the tight field went to the wrong one
Purdue's backfield in the first half was two new faces splitting carries 8-8, and the short field belonged to the one who could not move it. Travis Terrell Jr., a Jackson State transfer who averaged 5.95 yards a carry there last season, took five of Purdue's seven first-half runs inside the Indiana State 20 and gained seven yards on them: two, two, one, minus-one, three. Ijeboi, who was averaging better than nine a carry between the 20s on the same night, got one of those snaps. Ijeboi finished with 11 carries for 87 yards and a touchdown, 7.9 a pop; Terrell finished 11 for 32, 2.9. The most interesting Purdue name is the one that does not appear until the second half. Antonio Harris, the Boilermakers' leading returning rusher from 2025 with 69 carries, did not touch the ball before halftime, then took six carries after it, four of them on the closing drive. He was healthy and on the field late. The ball went elsewhere early.
The instinct is obvious: feed Ijeboi, especially inside the 20. History says hold that thought. Across 2024 and 2025 there are 194 team-games where two backs split carries almost evenly and one averaged double the other. The next week, that 6.0-yard-per-carry gap collapsed to 0.16, and the hot back graded out better again 73 times in 139, a coin flip. In the tighter tier that actually matches Purdue, both backs brand new to the program with no carries there the year before, there are fifteen games, and the hot back was the worse of the two a week later in nine of thirteen, his average falling from 9.47 to 3.21. Ijeboi's 7.9 is a career per-carry high against the 4.55 he averaged at Minnesota last season. The durable problem is not which back. Purdue ran six times inside the Indiana State 10 for ten yards and one successful carry, and its 2025 team norm inside the opponent 10 was 1.72 yards a carry. That zone was broken before either newcomer arrived, and none of the analog teams fixed it by reshuffling running backs.
The second snap of the fourth quarter
The half turned on defense before it turned on offense: back-to-back three-and-out stops opened the third quarter and handed Purdue the ball in a hurry. The play that ended any residual doubt came on the second snap of the fourth. Indiana State backup Brady Allen, facing 3rd-and-3, threw it to Don Saunders, who took it 35 yards the other way. Purdue's defensive line had been living in the backfield all night, eight tackles for loss as a team, with Mister Clark posting a sack, two of those tackles for loss and a pass breakup. Indiana State starter Elijah Owens managed 101 passing yards and 60 rushing yards against the first-team defense.
A lot of times, creating takeaways becomes contagious. If you know what you're doing, you understand your assignment, your eyes are in the right spot and you play fast, you have a chance to create a turnover.
Indiana State had no middle gear, and its own first downs built the trap
The Sycamores ran on more than two-thirds of their first downs, and eight of those thirteen carries gained two yards or fewer. That turned nearly every second down into 2nd-and-long, thirteen of fifteen at eight yards or more, and left the average Indiana State third down at 3rd-and-10.6. From there Indiana State converted only by hitting home runs. All four third-down conversions were gains of 24 yards or more: 24, 26, 41 and 55. The other seven third downs produced minus-three yards combined. Eight explosive plays accounted for 243 of the Sycamores' offensive yards; the other 37 snaps gained 42. Saunders' pick-six is that whole problem in one snap. It came on 3rd-and-3, one of only three third downs all night with fewer than eight yards to go, which made it the most predictable moment of the game.
That profile is measurable and it is grim. Since 2014, 80 team-games have combined bottom-decile efficiency, top-decile stuffed runs and top-5% explosiveness. Those offenses went 14-66, scored 17.1 points a game, lost by an average of 21.7 and covered only a third of the time. The chunk plays were worth something: equally inefficient offenses without them scored 6.2 points a game. But they moved the win rate from 6% to 18%, not to respectability. The nearest slice, FCS visitors at FBS hosts with this profile, is 0-14 with an average margin of minus-41.9 and 12.4 points a game, so Indiana State's 19 points and 25-point loss would be the best margin in that group. It also should not be banked on: of 64 analogs with a next game on file, not one repeated the profile, and their efficiency snapped back to roughly league median. What belongs to Indiana State is the first-down run rate, 68.4% here against 72.2% in its prior-season sample. Against Missouri Valley fronts that call sheet stays on schedule. Against this one it produced 3.2 yards a carry and 3rd-and-11.
A career night on a very short menu
Browne's 23-of-29, 317-yard, three-touchdown line was the best of his career, and it was built almost entirely underneath. By our charting of the play-by-play, 30 of Purdue's 34 charted throws were short, and the two most-targeted Boilermakers, FAU transfer Asaad Waseem and Iowa State transfer Xavier Townsend, were not thrown a single deep ball across sixteen targets. Browne gave them opposite jobs out of the same menu. Waseem caught six for 107, a 17.8-yard average, including the 18-yard touchdown. Townsend, by our count, caught seven for 47, three of them on third down. Purdue's four deep attempts went to Burhenn twice, to Harris and to Morrissette.
Across 2024 and 2025 there are 43 games where a team's top two pass-catchers finished within a catch of each other with one averaging 15-plus a grab and the other under eight. At 0.65% of team-games it is unusual, and it almost never held. The big-play half of the duo averaged 18.6 yards a catch in the analog game and 14.2 the next week on half the volume; the possession half went from 6.3 to 10.4. Of 42 duos, exactly one did it twice in the same season. That argues the Waseem and Townsend split was one night's coverage and script rather than two assigned roles. Waseem averaged 10.5 yards a catch across 69 receptions at Florida Atlantic last season, and regression toward that is the base case. The forward question is what the short menu leaves open: Purdue manufactured 330 passing yards with four charted deep shots, none of them to its two busiest targets, and the box score cannot tell you whether staying underneath was the plan or what Indiana State conceded.
Eighty-five yards, and what to actually take from this
The stat that will follow Purdue into next week is not the margin. It is nine penalties for 85 yards, including holds that wiped out Ijeboi's 63-yard touchdown run and a 72-yard kickoff return, with a punt return negated as well. That is roughly ten points of erased field position against an opponent that had no answer for Purdue's offense.
We had three scrimmages in fall camp, and we had Big Ten officials at all three. We had some penalties, but not this many. The thing that we have done well together as a staff is look at those things ... How do you teach that? Is it a habit? Is it a fundamental error? How did it occur? We have to learn from it. We're not going to be good enough to overcome 85 yards of penalties.
Historically similar games since 2019 — close margin, both offenses held far below norm — and how often that offense outperformed this level the following week.
The honest read on a 44-19 win over an FCS opponent is that the first half lied and the second half never answered it. A 9.1% red-zone success rate against a 41.4% norm regresses on its own, and the 32 teams that solved a compressed field by never entering it went 26-6 without proving they had learned anything. Thirteen of Indiana State's nineteen points came in the fourth quarter against Purdue's backups, which is the correct context for the final score. Those three second-half touchdown drives came against an FCS defense, and Big Ten defenses do not surrender 48- and 80-yard scoring drives, which means Purdue's offense will be forced to live in exactly the zone where it managed nineteen yards on eleven snaps before halftime. Nothing about this night ruled that out. Nothing about it fixed it either.
