Portland State vs. San Diego State: Final Score & Recap

What we projected, and where we were wrong

Our margin model made San Diego State the pick and gave it a 59.3% chance to win by about five points, 4.6 to be exact. The market said 38.5. San Diego State won by 33. The side was right and the size was wrong by 28 points, and both halves of that deserve saying out loud. Our number implied Portland State plus the points, and Portland State covered by 5.5; against the number is where this model has earned its keep, and it cashed. But the market's 38.5 was the closer read of the final score, and on this one the market had it.

The reason is honest and unflattering: a Week 1 game between an FBS host and an FCS visitor is the thinnest input the model ever handles. Neither Portland State nor San Diego State had a 2026 snap on file, no record, no ranking, no form line, and the pregame résumé on both sides was blank. What the projection did get right was how the game would be played, not by how much San Diego State would win it. The Aztecs took the per-play battle the way a favorite is supposed to: 6.16 yards a play to 4.63, an offensive PPA of 0.228 against 0.027, an explosive-play rate of 11.3% to 7.4%, and a score on 61.5% of their drives to Portland State's 28.6%. Those edges showed up. What no margin model prices, and what actually built the 33, is that at least 14 of San Diego State's points arrived on plays its offense never had to run.

The 29 points that ended it

The turn came early in the second quarter, and it came from San Diego State's punt team. Jelani McLaughlin blocked Emiliano Rodriguez Montanez's punt and Parker Threatt recovered at the Portland State 1. Lucky Sutton ran it in from there for a 14-6 lead. Portland State answered with a drive worth keeping, 58 yards on seven plays down to the San Diego State 17, and got nothing for it: Gavriel Lightfoot dropped Delon Thompson for a two-yard loss on a busted fourth down, a detail San Diego State's own account carries and no major outlet does.

Then Denegal hit Justius Lowe for 40 and a touchdown, Sutton ran 13 more for another, and it was 29-6 with a half still to play. Sione Hala, the senior linebacker who transferred in from Weber State, put the standard plainly: "To dominate. We talk about it every day... We can't start slow like that in every game." His unit obliged. Portland State's three second-quarter possessions all died in San Diego State territory: the turnover on downs at the 17, an interception by M. Lindsay at the 46, another by I. Green at the 21. Eighteen plays, 109 yards, no points.

Fifty-eight seconds of passing offense

San Diego State's entire downfield passing game fits inside 58 seconds of that second quarter. From 9:38 to 8:40, on a drive that began at its own 17, Denegal completed three throws for 85 yards: 16 to D. Brown, a 29-yard conversion to Nasir Acevedo on 3rd-and-12, then the 40-yard touchdown to Lowe on the very next snap. On the other 19 dropbacks of the game San Diego State gained 64 yards. That is 3.37 a dropback, worse than the FCS visitor's 5.15 per pass play. Denegal's official line, 12-of-17 for 137 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, is a perfectly good afternoon that was really a minute long.

Nights like that have a specific history. Since 2024, among 236 team-games in which a team scored 50 or more points, the median passing total is 297.5 yards, and only 3.8% came on 137 yards or fewer. Widen the lens and the shape takes a name. Across 2014-2025, 123 team-games cleared 50 points with an offensive PPA at or below 0.25, and San Diego State's 0.2276 sits in the 5.5th percentile of all 1,630 FBS 50-point performances. Those 123 teams shared this game's mechanism rather than its offense: they started drives an average of 59.6 yards out against 65.2 for the efficient 50-burgers, and they forced 2.93 takeaways against 1.99. San Diego State forced three.

They won 91.1% of those games, which is what 50 points buys. But they won by 26.5 rather than 36.9, and they covered 81.8% of the time rather than 86.6%. San Diego State, laying 38.5, won by 33 and did not cover, which is the archetype almost exactly. The divergence arrives the following week: that low-efficiency group scored 32.6 next time out, won 54.4% and went .561 the rest of the season, while the efficient 50-point group won 64.9% next out and .617 after. Correlation, not destiny, and none of it is about San Diego State specifically. The trade-off this game exposed is the part worth keeping: three explosive throws are not a plan, and the two things that made them enough, three takeaways and an opponent that converted none of six trips into San Diego State territory, are the least stable inputs in football.

Portland State's problem was the last 25 yards, not the first 75

The finding that reframes the night sits in Portland State's drive chart. Fourteen drives, twelve of them starting on its own side of the 50, and those twelve produced 71 plays, 313 yards, zero touchdowns and six points, both of them Lees field goals. The offense could move: four of those twelve reached inside the San Diego State 25, getting to the 5, the 18, the 17 and the 22. They yielded two field goals and two turnovers on downs. Nobody missed a kick in this game on either side. Lees made both, DiLeva made his one from 31, and the Portland State stalls were fourth-down failures.

League-wide, an own-territory drive that reaches inside the opponent's 25 becomes a touchdown 67.9% of the time, across 98,826 such drives from 2014 through 2025. Portland State went 0-for-4. Push it out to the full shape and it gets rare: among team-games with at least twelve own-side drives and at least 300 own-side yards, the mean is 3.24 touchdowns and only 1.75% produce zero. Tighten it to the exact signature, four or more drives from your own side into the opponent's 25 with zero touchdowns on them, and the drive table returns 98 team-games out of 14,285 across twelve seasons. Roughly one in 145.

Those 98 are as grim as you would guess, and grimmer against the number. The 78 that join cleanly to a score and a line went 22-56, a 28.2% win rate, at a mean margin of -11.8 and 12.7 points a game. They covered 20.5% of the time despite an average line of only +3.4, so these were not overmatched teams on paper; their days were decided at the goal line. Fifteen of the 78 lost by 30 or more, which is where Portland State's -33 sits. Only 13 scored even 20 points. Portland State reached exactly 20, and 14 of those came off San Diego State giveaways.

The two possessions San Diego State gave away

Both Portland State drives that began in San Diego State territory started with a San Diego State mistake. Early in the third quarter Nasir Acevedo muffed a 36-yard punt at the San Diego State 10 and J. Henry recovered; two snaps later Gabe Downing found Terence Loville for a 10-yard touchdown. In the fourth, D. West forced a fumble, C. Kennedy recovered at the San Diego State 42, and Portland State went eleven plays and 42 yards to a Downing one-yard touchdown run. Thirteen plays, 52 yards, fourteen points, the whole of Portland State's touchdown output, on possessions it did not earn.

Seventeen seconds after Loville's score, San Diego State took the reply out of the argument. Jaylon Hawkins caught the kickoff at the goal line and returned it 100 yards, breaking along the right sideline before cutting back across the field, for 36-13. It was the first kickoff-return touchdown by an Aztec since Jordan Byrd on Nov. 12, 2022 against San Jose State. Oberhiri Eyafe blocked a second punt later to hand the offense the ball at the Portland State 30. Downing, meanwhile, went 31-of-52 for 280 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and Loville caught ten of them for 119 yards, the largest single-player EPA contribution in a game his team lost by 33.

Lucky Sutton's three touchdowns were a job, not a rushing performance

Sutton became the first Aztec with three rushing touchdowns in a game since Juwan Washington on Sept. 8, 2018, and he got there on 18 carries for 58 yards. That is 3.22 a pop, a 38.9% success rate against San Diego State's team mark of 43.5%, and a long run of 13 that was itself one of the scores. Seven of his 18 carries came inside the Portland State 20, where he gained 24 yards and scored all three times, from the 1, the 13 and the 5. Seven red-zone carries and three touchdowns is a role, and a valuable one; whether it is design or rotation is a usage question a box score cannot settle. It is not a rushing performance. In 2025 Sutton carried 253 times for 1,292 yards at 5.11 a carry. Among 399 player-games with three or more rushing touchdowns since 2024, the median rushing total is 122 yards, and only 6.3% came at 3.3 yards a carry or worse.

San Diego State's chunk running came from three backs who did not record a single carry for the program in all of 2025. J. Kinnard broke a 55-yarder late in the first quarter down to the Portland State 9, setting up the opening touchdown; J. Lucas added 27 and J. Thomas 18. Those three runs accounted for 100 of the team's 221 rushing yards. On the other 36 carries San Diego State gained 121, or 3.36 a pop, against an FCS front.

San Diego State's efficiency box says something sharper than its box score. The line-yards figure, 3.11, was lower than Portland State's 3.21, and San Diego State was stuffed at or behind the line on 22.5% of its runs against Portland State's 10.3%. It lost the run-blocking battle. Across 2014-2025, teams built exactly like that, out-blocked at the line and stuffed at more than twice the opponent's rate, won 33.1% of the time at an average margin of -14.6. One number rescues them, and it rescued San Diego State: open-field yardage, the ground gained past the second level. The bottom quartile of that comp set won 16.7% of the time and the top quartile won 49.0%. San Diego State's 1.90 open-field yards per carry sits in the 82nd percentile, against Portland State's 0.00. The pattern predicts no collapse, since the 182 teams who won big anyway went 62.9% the next week, about a normal blowout-winner's rate. But open-field yardage is the least repeatable input a run game has, and here it rested on 17 carries and one 55-yard run.

Portland State's third down flipped at halftime

In the first half Portland State faced ten third downs and threw on all ten. Downing went 5-of-10 for 63 yards with five conversions and an interception. After the break the Vikings started handing it off, three runs on nine third-down snaps, and both of their second-half conversions came on those runs: Delon Thompson for seven on 3rd-and-6, and Loville, their leading receiver, taking a carry for two on 3rd-and-1. Downing's second-half third-down line was 1-of-6 for 12 yards and no conversions, with three of his five incompletions thrown deep on 3rd-and-3, 3rd-and-5 and 3rd-and-6, the medium distances where he had been taking the short completion before halftime.

The tempting reading is that the run was the answer nobody used: Portland State's run-stuff rate of 10.3% sat in the 15th percentile of all team-games since 2014, and it converted 83.3% in short yardage. History says treat that as a trap. Across 2014-2025 there are 541 team-games with this exact signature, a run game winning at the line, short yardage converting, and total offensive EPA per play under 0.10, which Portland State's 0.027 clears easily. Those teams went 13.9%, lost by 17.4 on average, covered 24.9% and missed their number by 9.7 points. The control matters more than the analogs: 7,422 other team-games with the same dead offense whose run game was not winning at the line went 22.1%, slightly better. Portland State's healthy-looking run numbers bought nothing, most likely because the causation runs backward, since a defense that is ahead and playing the pass makes stuff rates and short-yardage numbers look good on a handful of carries. Whether Downing's second-half deep balls were the plan or an answer to San Diego State's coverage is not something the play text can settle, and this read belongs on the watch list rather than in a verdict.

What actually travels to Week 2

San Diego State's per-play edge is the durable half of the night, and it survives the special teams. Its average drive started at its own 37 to Portland State's own 32. Remove the three gifts, the drive at the Portland State 1 after McLaughlin's block, the drive at the 30 after Eyafe's, and Hawkins' return, which is a zero-play possession, and San Diego State's remaining ten drives started at its own 31, nearly a yard worse than Portland State's average. From ordinary field position it still built four touchdown drives of 54, 65, 65 and 83 yards, averaging 6.5 plays each. At 6.16 yards a play, that is about a half-yard better than San Diego State's own 2025 average of 5.82. That half-yard is the one thing in a 33-point win the numbers will carry into Week 2.

The number most likely to follow this team into next week, though, is 62 to 81. Of 568 early-season FBS blowouts of FCS opponents from 2014-2025, only 50, or 8.8%, came with the winner out-snapped by 15 or more plays. Those 50 went 19-31 in their very next game, a 38.0% win rate at an average margin of -4.5, then 45.0% the rest of the way, with exactly half finishing above .500. The same blowout achieved with a snap advantage produced 55.9% next out and 56.4% after, and winning records 68% of the time. Two caveats hold that in place: the out-snapped group entered those games about 65 Elo points weaker, and San Diego State came in at 1518, at the healthier end of the band; and the market already knows, since those teams went a coin-flip 0.479 against the spread the following week. The structural point stands anyway. An offense that scores in 6.5-play bursts also gives the ball back in 6.5 plays, so the per-play edge has to hold every week, because there will be fewer chances to use it.

For Portland State the read inverts, and it is gentler than 53-20 suggests. The finishing failure is a variance event rather than a structure: of the 68 analogs with a next game, 62 put touchdowns on that same drive type the following week, averaging 2.78, and their rest-of-season rate of zero-touchdown games ran below the league baseline. Expect the finishing to normalize. Do not expect the 20 points to repeat, because 14 of them were San Diego State's mistakes rather than anything Portland State manufactured. The number to watch is not third-down run rate; it is whether Downing's medium-distance third downs go back to the short completions that converted five times before halftime.

How about them Aztecs? 1-0. That's good. I'm pleased with the effort, but there's a ton that we've got to clean up.

Lewis also made a point of thanking the crowd, "I'd like to give a big shoutout to the student section. It was awesome to see them filling in," and Sutton, asked about the 6-0 hole, gave the most human explanation available: "It's a little bit of butterflies. It was a slow start, but we found ourselves." Both things are true. So is the arithmetic under them: this was a 33-point win in which the winner lost the line-yards battle 3.21 to 3.11, was stuffed on 22.5% of its runs to Portland State's 10.3%, and ran 19 fewer plays. San Diego State earned the margin in the 25 yards Portland State could not cross and in three plays its offense never had to run. That is a fine way to start 1-0. It is a thin way to project anything.
